How to Become a Auto Insurance Agent

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007 / Category: Insurance Agency Articles

Passing The State Licensing Exam is Easy With InsuranceLeadz.com Pre-Exam Coursework and Training

Just like becoming an insurance agent in general, auto insurance agents must meet a set of standard requirements.

Education Background

Insurance companies prefer to hire agents that have a bachelors degree in one of the following fields: Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, Advertising, Marketing, or Logistics.

Insurance companies also prefer if you have taken some insurance related courses during your college term. Doing so can greatly increase your chances of being hired over similarly qualified applicants.

It is not always required that you have a bachelors degree, but it will make getting hired by an independent agency more difficult. If you are starting your own independent agency and not operating as a captive agent, then having a college degree might not matter at all. Don’t be discouraged if you never attended or finished college, as I know many successful independent agents without degrees.

Exams, Licensing, and Entering the Industry

You will be required to take a series of courses and an licensure exam before you will be able to sell auto insurance. Most states require a pre-set lineup of course work that you will need to complete before you will be allowed to take the exam. The importance of the exam and coursework is to make sure you have a firm understanding of your states insurance laws, regulations, and basic insurance fundamentals.

Also, it is important to remember that once you take and pass the exam, you will only be licensed to sell Property & Casualty product lines in most states. If you would also like to sell health and life insurance, or other various non P&C products, you may be required to get several additional licenses.

After you have passed the licensure exam, you may also consider taking additional courses to get further designations. After 3 years of insurance industry experience, one designation you may seek is the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). This requires an additional 10 courses and you assurance that you will abide by a strict ethical code. Gaining a CPCU designation can help you become a better insurance agent and improve your resume.
