Passing The State Licensing Exam is Easy With InsuranceLeadz.com Pre-Exam Coursework and Training

Becoming a health insurance agent is much like becoming any other type of insurance agent. The major difference though, is that for many health insurance agents, they feel like they are truly serving the members of their community by helping them protect their health. A good health agent, can be an incredibly valuable source for any individual, family, or business.

Education Background

Most health insurance agents have a bachelors degree or at least some college. While it is quite possible to have a successful career in the industry without one, I highly recommend obtaining a bachelors degree in one or more of the following majors:

  • Finance
  • Statistics
  • Marketing
  • Business Administration
  • Sociology
  • Public Relations
  • Social Work
  • Psychology
  • Nursing

You should discuss your course options with your college advisor. There may be additional insurance related classes that you can take to further prepare you for a career in the insurance field.

The Health Insurance Industry and What to Expect

As an agent, you will actually be licensed to sell both life insurance and health insurance. This groups you into a category commonly referred to as life and health insurers. Do not mistake this for property & casualty insurance agents (P&C agents sell auto and home insurance).

As a health insurance agent you will be responsible for finding an insurance policy that will cover the costs of medical care, income loss, and/or associated medical expenses for your clients. Your clientele may vary from individuals and families, all the way up to entire companies. Additional licenses may be required if you would like to sell group health insurance plans to corporations, non profits, or student organizations.

Training and Licensing

This information will not apply to everyone as health insurance licensing regulations vary quite a bit from state to state. However, its generally accepted that you will be required to take pre-licensing courses. These courses will provide you with the necessary foundation that all insurance agents need such as: laws, regulations, and insurance fundamentals.

When it comes time to take your exam, you will need to choose what product lines you want to sell. If you only want to sell health insurance, you can typically opt for an Accident and Health license. This will only allow you to sell health insurance, if you would like to sell life insurance as well, you will be required to get additional certifications.

To sell life insurance products you will need to acquire a Series 6 or Series 7 accreditation. You may find it is more difficult to pass the Series 6 or 7 then the health insurance licensing exam, so be prepared for many hours of studying before taking the test. The Series 6 allows you to sell mutual funds and annuities. The Series 7 allows you to trade securities, with the exception of commodities or futures. While it can be beneficial to have the Series 7, the Series 6 is all most life insurance agents I know have. Click here to learn more about becoming a life insurance agent.

The benefits of getting licensed as a health/life insurance agent is that you will normally be allowed to sell insurance products in more then one state without having to take additional course and exams. Typically, you will just have to pay an additional fee in each state to legally be allowed to sell products there.
