It All Starts with a Proper Education
It can be highly beneficial to have a college degree when starting off in the insurance industry. A bachelors degree in any of the following majors:
- Finance
- Accounting
- Economics
- Advertising
- Statistics
- Logistics
- Marketing
- Business Administration
While its not required that you have a bachelors degree to find a job in the industry, it would benefit you greatly. I know several home insurance agents who run independent agencies without a college degree.

What Does it Mean to be a Home Insurance Agent
First off, typically there is no such thing as someone who is just a home insurance agent. When you become licensed to sell home insurance you also are able to sell auto insurance, because you will be a Property & Casualty licensed insurance agent. Also, its very common for a person who has their home insurance with one company, to seek that same company for auto insurance as well. As a home insurance agent you will certainly insure many clients with multiple complimenting policies.
During your training to become a home insurance agent, you will become quite familiar with the terminology of Property and Casualty. What Property refers to is the covering loss or damage to a home/vehicle and the possessions found in or around these. Casualty refers to covering costs associated with legal expenses for someone who claims to have been injured in or by the covered home/vehicle.

Licensing and Industry Regulations
To become a home insurance agent, you will go through the same process of courses and exams auto insurance agents go through. These include a set of pre-licensing courses followed by a state issued licensing exam. Once you have successfully completed both the courses and exam, you will licensed to sell home and auto insurance in your state.
